John Lansing was 33 years old at the time of the convention. He was born in Albany, New York on January 30th, 1754. In all my research I could not find out if he was born into wealth but he was a very rich man. I do not believe he went to college but he did study law under Robert Yates and was admitted to the New York Bar. His main occupation was a lawyer and a statesman. In the 1800’s his household included his wife, seven children and three slaves. John Lansing did not sign the Constitution, he left the convention early. He decided to leave when he realized they were drafting a whole new constitution instead of revising the Articles of Confederation. I found it interesting that out of all the delegates his death was the most mysterious. He left his hotel room to mail a letter, no trace of him was ever found, It is presumed he was murdered or drowned. He was 75 years old.
